Historical fiction? Sci-fi adventure? Love story? Outlander is all of the above. It's a story with something for everyone — time travel, Scottish lore, kilted Highland warriors, and, of course, an epic romance. Get ready to watch this much-loved saga come to life with our Outlander primer:
World War II has ended and Claire Randall, a capable and headstrong combat nurse, has finally been reunited with her husband, Frank, when she is mysteriously transported back in time to 1743 Scotland. Suddenly thrown into an unknown world full of danger, Claire is forced to marry Jamie Fraser, a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior. A passionate affair is ignited that tears Claire's heart between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.
The STARZ original series Outlander is adapted from the internationally best-selling novels by author Diana Gabaldon, which she began writing in 1988. To date, the series has sold over 20 million copies worldwide.
Gabaldon has a cameo appearance in an early episode of the show! Her part is yet to be revealed, but lines were written just for her and she got to visit the STARZ Outlander set in Scotland to film the scene.
Gabaldon's inspiration for the setting and time period of Outlander came from certain episodes of the British TV series Doctor Who that featured a young 18th-century Scottish man named Jamie McCrimmon — also the inspiration for the name Jamie Fraser.
The name Claire was partly inspired by a main character in the novel House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende, which Gabaldon read right before writing Outlander.
Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser, born on October 20, 1918, is a Libra — diplomatic, a lover of peace and harmony, at times indecisive and self-indulgent.
Gaelic expert Àdhamh Ó Broin was on the set throughout the filming of Outlander to teach the actors how to pronounce the vocabulary of the ancient language correctly.
The name Dougal MacKenzie — Jamie's uncle — was inspired by the author's redheaded husband, Douglas — a name with Scottish origins.
Jamie Fraser, born on May 1, 1721, is a Taurus — cautious yet determined, sometimes to the point of stubbornness.
Jamie and Claire's Taurus and Libra pairing is an excellent love match — they complete each other. Their relationship has all the makings of an epic romance.
Jamie often calls Claire "Sassenach" as a term of endearment. It is actually a derogatory Gaelic word that means outlander or foreigner, specifically an English person in Scotland.
