But there is more to this household than meets the eye. They face their son Max's challenges with Asperger's, daughter Haddie's growing independence and changing relationships, and, in Season 3, the arrival of new baby Nora. Weathering their struggles is testament to their strength as a family.
This family unit is far from conventional … while being pretty conventional. In the first season, Jasmine shows up at Crosby's houseboat with her and Crosby's five-year-old son, Jabbar. This kicks off a roller-coaster ride for commitment-phobic Crosby. Over the course of five seasons, Jabbar and Crosby grow close, Jasmine and Crosby marry, and at the end of Season 5, they welcome a baby girl, Aida.
Zeek and Camille Braverman sit at the top of the family tree. Married nearly 50 years, they've been through it all. Zeek's gruff, ex-Army personality often clashes with Camille's gentle, artistic sensitivities. But regardless of the financial and romantic turmoil between them, their bond is strong, and they always make time for their grown children — Adam, Sarah, Crosby, and Julia — and their grandkids.
From the pilot episode on, Sarah's family is the one whose challenges are most obvious at first glance. Divorced from the party-animal father of her children, Sarah moves her clan in with Zeek and Camille. Amber's bitterness makes her rebellious, and Drew's disappointment makes him withdrawn. Over five seasons, their triumphs are especially moving considering the obstacles they face separately and together.
As a high-achieving attorney, Julia likes to run a tight ship at home and at the office. But Julia’s career often interferes with her relationships. When Julia discovers she can no longer bear children, she and Joel go through the emotional process of adopting Victor, a troubled boy who is two years older than their daughter Sydney. In Season 5, Julia and Joel separate when their parenting roles are reversed and pressures increase.
