Ask a typical townsperson in Cheesebridge, and they'll
tell you that beastly creatures roam the night. But boxtrolls aren't monstrous — just misunderstood. In fact, they're
gentle and caring enough to adopt an infant human and
raise him as one of their own.
The creators of Coraline and ParaNorman have painstakingly handcrafted a new world for their latest fun family adventure. Scroll down to see how stop-motion animation brings The Boxtrolls to life. Then play "Free the Boxtrolls" to help liberate as many of the gentle creatures as you can.
Nowadays, nearly all animation is done with computer software. But the makers of The Boxtrolls opted for old-school analog animation. Stop-motion means hand-building each character and set piece — every building, vehicle, weed, and pebble — then manipulating their movements frame by frame to create the illusion of motion. Even the smoke, fire, water, and dust have been hand built. Watch these videos to see how the magic happens.
