After numerous talent shows and standing ovations in Dolly Parton's hometown of Sevierville, Ashley knew she was born to sing and perform. She started writing her own material at age 13 and moved to Nashville to pursue her singing career just a couple of years later. Today she's living her dream, performing with good friend Blake Shelton, and working on a brand-new album scheduled to be released this spring. Eager to find out more about Ashley, Country Deep™ arranged a quick interview with this young, talented country star.
Looking back at what you've done so far, was there a defining moment that brought you where you are today?I feel like there have been several moments that have gotten me here really: moving to Nashville with my mom at age 15, my friendship with Miranda and Angaleena, starting the Pistol Annies, working with and looking up to Vince Gill. Those are the ones that stick out now, but there are many more.
“life isn’t perfect, but it’s still beautiful.” Can you tell us a little bit more about your new song, “Lonely Tonight”? What's it like to work with Blake Shelton?Blake has always been a huge supporter of me, and I can't thank him enough for bringing me that opportunity. Doing something with your friend is so much more fun. He just texted me and asked me if I wanted to be on the song, but said to do it only if I loved it. He sent it right over and I knew from the start that I was in.
You've written some amazing songs for yourself, but you also write songs for other artists. Is it difficult to detach yourself from something you've worked on so hard? Not really. As a writer and artist, I understand what songs work for me and what songs I would love to hear others perform. It's always great to hear your friends bring a song to life in their own personal way.
About performing, what goes on in your head the moment before you go on stage?Don't fall, and have fun!
Ha ha, love the attitude! Do you think fame has changed you in any way?I've definitely become more appreciative of family and friends and the times spent with them. And helping others has become a big part of my life.
Do you read articles, twitter feeds, etc., about yourself?I try to keep up with it as much as I can. Love connecting with fans and hearing from them on social media!
Sure! Yes, I'm back at it again with Vince Gill and Justin Niebank. When Vince and I first sat down, we both agreed we didn't want to make the same record, but it's still me and I couldn't be more proud of it!
Got to sneak in a personal question here. “Like a Rose” is a beautifully written song, and one of my favorites. What do the words "like a rose” mean to you?Thank you! To me, they mean that life isn't perfect but it's still beautiful.
Yeah, I think we all need to remember that from time to time. Is there anything else you'd like to tell your fans before we say goodbye?I'm looking forward to getting out on the road and seeing you all in 2015!
Thanks, Ashley. So are we!
